What makes being preppy, "preppy." What type of style is preppy? Is it by the clothes that you wear, or is by the way that you act? How does one know when they are truly preppy?

When I hear the word preppy I think of guys with blazers, button down shirts, loafers, and a clean cut hairstyle. For girls I think of dresses, dresses, and more dresses lol and pearls too, cant forget that :) Do I consider myself preppy? Sometimes...yes, but I'm not entitled to one style.
The real definition of preppy by dictionary standards
prep·py
[ préppee ]
- relating to young well-educated affluent people: relating to or characteristic of well-educated, fairly affluent young people who are known for their neat, traditional, often expensive style of dress
I on the other hand know that being preppy doesn't mean wearing Hollister, or Abercrombie 24/7. Even though I LOVE these two brands, I don't think it really classifies as being "preppy." Though this is just my opinion, and I think I am entitled to my own opinion right?
Now how does a true preppy person dress? The way they dress must be traditional, classic, classy, and timeless. So basically something that is classy that has a touch of traditional style.
The definition above, I don't entirely agree with. Someone could be dumb as a doormat, and still have a true preppy way of dressing. It doesn't matter how smart you are to dress preppy people. So why does this dictionary standard say this?? Because society expects people that dress or act preppy to be well educated, but that isn't the case. Now I feel like im getting off subject -.-
This is just my opinion on what I think a true prep is. I will let you decipher what you think of what it truly is to be preppy.
